Fog Bow – My Favorite Bay Area Phenomenon

During a recent morning trailrun in Pacifica, I saw a fog bow (fogbow). The fog bow is my favorite outdoor weather feature. It appears in fog banks opposite of the sun. It is similar to a rainbow but its color is white versus ROYBGIV. It is also called a white rainbow or a ghost bow.

I’ve seen fogbows most often as fog burns off along the California coast. Favorite spots include the California Coastal Trail in Pacifica or Montara Mountain in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

No confirmation yet whether the fog bows contain pots of gold. I’ll keep folks posted.
