Will the Broncos try to trade for Alex Smith?

The Kansas City Chiefs are “open” to trading quarterback Alex Smith this offseason, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That likely means Kansas City is comfortable with starting Patrick Mahomes II sooner rather than later.

The Denver Broncos are among the potential teams that would be interested in Smith’s services, according to Rapoport. They would have plenty of competition from teams including the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals, though.

And even if the Broncos did make a strong push for Smith, it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs being willing to trade a quality quarterback to a division rival. Kansas City doesn’t want to play against Smith twice every season.

The Cardinals and Browns are the most likely landing spots for Smith, according to former NFL executive Joe Banner. So while Denver may try to make a move for Smith, the chances of the 33-year-old quarterback wearing orange and blue in 2018 are likely slim to none.
