UnREAL, the scripted show that takes an unapologetic behind the scenes look at reality shows like The Bachelor(ette), is Lifetime’s latest hit that you should totally be watching. Its leading lady, Shiri Appleby, deserves much of the credit for the show’s success. In addition to her current role, Appleby has also graced TV screens as a love interest for many main characters, a human who falls for an alien/human hybrid, and a teen mom who reconnects with the daughter she gave up for adoption fifteen years earlier.
If you’re itching for more Shiri Appleby, then we’ve compiled five titles on streaming just for you. It’s kind of like a “meet cute” in a romantic comedy, but because it’s all streaming, we’re calling it your “meet queue.”
Roswell (1999-2002)
Appleby got her first big break on this Jason Katims drama. Roswell followed a group of alien/human hybrids trying to pass as regular teenagers. Appleby plays Liz, a human who falls in love with one of the hybrids, Max (Jason Behr). Life Unexpected (2010-2011)
The short lived CW show followed fifteen year old Lux who, while trying to get emancipated to escape the foster system, encounters her birth parents Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) and Cate (Appleby). Cate, a radio personality, is eager to get to know Lux and is beyond happy when she gains custody of her. Between adjusting to motherhood and dealing with the slacker man child that is Baze, the show is full of humor, heart, and crazy drama. [Where to stream Life Unexpected]
Chicago Fire (2012-2013)
Chicago Fires follows a group of firefighters and paramedics in The Windy City. Appleby has a six episode stint in season one as Clarice, an ex-girlfriend of Shay (Lauren German) who has since married a rich man and is pregnant. Clarice and Shay reignite their relationship and add to the nearly unbelievably dramatic lives of the characters. [Where to stream Chicago Fire]
Girls (2013-2014)
Appleby plays Natalia, a girlfriend to Adam (Adam Driver), during the second and third seasons of the hit HBO comedy. Natalia is a nice normal girl who, unfortunately, has to date Adam at his weirdest point. This is definitely the edgiest role for Appleby as it included one of the most uncomfortable sex scenes on Girls to date. (And that’s saying a lot.) [Where to stream Girls]
UnREAL (2015)
The Lifetime drama, which was recently renewed for a second season, follows Rachel (Appleby) a producer on Everlasting, a Bachelor-esque show. The gritty drama shows how contestants are manipulated by Rachel (and other producers) all for sake of ratings and how those manipulations effect the producers both professionally and personally.
