Social Well-Being, Economic Growth, & Environmental Awareness
The Government of Maldives has developed tourism based on the principles of a "one hotel - one island" type of tourism. Demands for accommodation, leisure, and attractions, forced resort islands to convert from deserted and uninhabited islands into fully equipped tourist islands with facilities for visitor's comfort ability. The tourist resort islands provide lodging for several hundreds tourists, which puts great stress on the various atoll-and-reef ecosystems of the islands. As a result, increasing tourism has caused great disturbance to the ecosystems, despite the Government of Maldive's strong aim for sustainable development. Many people who visit the islands express their willingness to support environmentally-friendly tourism. Vistors also accept the government's strict environmental rules and regulations for conserving the Maldive's beautiful oceans and views.
