What is Churaumi Aquarium?
“Churaumi Aquarium” is located in the marine park in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa.
In October 2018, the cumulative number of visitors exceeded 100 million!
“Chura” in the name has the meaning of “beautiful” in Okinawan language.
I think it’s the perfect word to describe the sea of Okinawa.
Churaumi Aquarium is famous for its huge aquarium that runs from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor.
This aquarium is one of the largest in the world with a length of 35m, a width of 27m, a depth of 10m, and a water volume of 7,500 cubic meters.
Whale sharks, manta rays, and hordes of fish are bred in a huge aquarium.

Highlights of Churaumi Aquarium
The main theme of Churaumi Aquarium is “Encounter with the Sea of Okinawa”.
It is designed to reproduce from the surface of the sea around Okinawa to a depth of around 700m.

Tropical fish tank
At the “Sea of Tropical Fish”, you can meet colorful fish.
This aquarium reproduces shallow rocks and even underwater caves.

About 140 species of tropical fish are exhibited in this aquarium.

Deep aquarium
The deep aquarium reproduces the world of the deep sea with a depth of 200 m or more.
In this aquarium, the water temperature, light intensity, pressure, etc. are finely controlled.

About 20 species of deep-sea creatures are on display in the aquarium.

The most popular spot for families with children is the shallow creatures corner.
Here, you can touch about 10 species of creatures such as starfish and sea cucumbers that live in the shallow waters of Okinawa.
Some creatures feel as they look, and some are surprisingly gritty.
Coral aquarium
You can see various kinds of coral in the sea around Okinawa, which is popular with divers.
However, even people who are not good at swimming can enjoy the “coral aquarium”.
In this aquarium, you can observe 450 colonies of about 70 species.
This aquarium has no roof and natural light comes in directly, so you can enjoy a view close to the real sea.
The corals on display have been carefully cultivated over more than 10 years.
