A bunch of animal activists might feel like burying their heads in the sand after their scheme to free a pair of circus ostriches ended in disaster.
The bird brains opened a cage at the Kaiser Circus in Munich and let a couple of ostriches – Nala and Zawo – fly the coop.
The ostriches– along with Fred the goose– bolted into the night, but Nala was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver.
Fred and Zawo were recovered, but the living ostrich might now have to be put down due to German laws requiring ostriches to be kept in pairs, Suddeutsche Zeitung reported.
“It’s really affected me, I live with my animals,” circus director André Kaiser told the paper after the ostrich’s tragic demise.
Kaiser, whose family has run the circus for over 200 years, said he had been tending to his camels and had not noticed the break-in, The Local reported.
Activists had plastered almost all the circus posters with slogans like “Animal torturers. Free all animals,” The Local reported.
They also smashed the window of Kaiser’s office and freed some donkeys.The director also was assaulted.
“When I wanted to go and have a look after hearing the dogs barking, I was attacked from behind and hit over the head,” he said.
