Visualising global GOLD production in 2023 and AFRICA’s top 5 gold producers: Over 3,000 tonnes of #gold were produced globally in 2023. In this graphic, we list the world’s leading countries in terms of #goldproduction. These figures come from the latest USGS publication on gold statistics (published January 2024). #China 🇨🇳 was the TOP producer in 2023, responsible for over 12% of total global production, followed by #Australia 🇦🇺 and #Russia 🇷🇺. Gold mines in China are primarily concentrated in eastern provinces such as Shandong, Henan, Fujian, and Liaoning. As of January 2024, China’s gold mine reserves stand at an estimated 3,000 tonnes, representing around 5% of the global total of 59,000 tonnes. In addition to being the top producer, China emerged as the largest buyer of the yellow metal for the year. In fact, the country’s central bank alone bought 225 tonnes of gold in 2023, according the #WorldGoldCouncil. Estimated Global Gold Consumption: Most of the gold produced in 2023 was used in #jewellery production, while another significant portion was sold as a store of value, such as in #goldbars or #coins. The new hotel—which opened with 373 rooms in 2019 as part of a larger $363 million #airport upgrade—allows #EthiopianAirlines to offer its own hospitality brand. The shining structure joins a sister property—the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel—which opened in 2022 in T2 of Bole as the airport continued its massive modernization mandate with the help of #Beijing backing and facilitation. The in-Terminal property has 97 rooms and other welcoming amenities. It is available to book by the hour or the day ($100 per day, with hourly rates also available) for those who need rest before connecting onward at the airport. The newly expanded Skylight property just across from the airport offers, among other things, the largest Chinese restaurant in Ethiopia, an equally sprawling traditional foods restaurant, and a grand ballroom for 5,000 (2,000 sit-down guests)—making it possibly the largest hotel ballroom in Africa—as well as five function rooms, spa and fitness center, an expansive outdoor heated swimming pool, and a mini golf driving range. 15th Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit kicks off in Gambia: The 15th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) started on Saturday in the Gambian capital #Banjul. World leaders from the 57 member countries of the #OIC and beyond are expected to attend the summit, according to a statement. The summit aims to strengthen unity “in collectively addressing the pressing challenges facing the Ummah (#Muslim community) and expanding #cooperation and solidarity among member countries in the pursuit of a shared goals as enshrined in the charter.” The OIC added that the summit also aims to “expand our domestic economy and revitalize small and medium enterprises,” in addition to “taking the opportunity to share the #wealth of Gambian and #Africanculture with the #WORLD.” The summit, taking place through Sunday with the central theme "Enhancing unity and solidarity through dialogue for sustainable development," will address global issues, notably the current situation in #Palestine and the ongoing Israeli war in the #GazaStrip, which has killed over 34,000 people. During the summit, three key documents – a draft Palestinian resolution, draft Banjul statement, and the draft final document – will be presented to the Council of Foreign Ministers and subsequently to the summit for discussion. In case you missed it: Avocado is one of Africa’s untapped export potentials: Here’s what to know: #AFRICA produces around 1.7 million tonnes of #avocados annually, accounting for 20% of global production. #Kenya 🇰🇪 is the largest African producer with 345,000 tons, followed by #SouthAfrica 🇿🇦 and #Tanzania 🇹🇿. Other major producers include #CôtedIvoire 🇨🇮, #Ghana 🇬🇭, and #Ethiopia 🇪🇹. However, the potential is much greater. Avocado trees thrive in Africa’s climate, and production could easily double or triple with improved #farming techniques and investments in #infrastructure and #technology. Currently, the majority of African avocados are destined for domestic markets. Less than 10% of production is exported. Export Potential African avocados have huge export potential, especially for European markets where demand is growing exponentially. Currently, #Europe relies heavily on #imports from #LatinAmerica and Israel. But AFRICA has advantages, including lower labour costs and proximity to European markets. The #AfricanContinentalFreeTradeArea (AfCFTA), which eliminates tariffs on 90% of goods traded between members, could be a major catalyst for Africa’s avocado #export industry. By reducing trade barriers between African countries, #AfCFTA will enable avocado producers to access larger regional markets. Farmers will also benefit from economies of scale, incentivising investments that will boost productivity. Market Growth Outlook The global avocado 🥑 market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 8% in the coming years. Demand continues to outstrip supply due to avocados’ rising popularity as a superfruit and ingredient in natural cosmetics, snacks, and restaurants. Africa is well positioned to seize more market share, combining competitive advantages, growing production, and trade integration under AfCFTA. With the right investments and policies, Africa’s avocado industry could emerge as an economic growth engine — generating millions of jobs, increasing farmers’ incomes, and transforming the continent into a major player in the global avocado trade. AfCFTA offers a vital framework to realise this avocado gold. Ghana’s Asante King proudly displays returned looted artefacts at the newly refurbished Manhyia Palace Museum: Ghana's Asante King on Wednesday displayed for the first time dozens of royal #artefacts looted during colonial rule, after they were returned by British museums on a long-term loan agreement as part of his silver jubilee celebrations. The #BritishMuseum and the Victoria & Albert Museum earlier this year agreed to return 32 gold and silver treasures pillaged by British military forces from #Asante leader Asantehene's court during the 19th-century Anglo-Asante Wars. They include the sword of the state known as Mpomponsuo and the gold badges of officials authorised to purify the king's soul. The collection also features a gold lute harp presented by Asantehene Osei Bonsu to British diplomat Thomas Edward Bowdich during an 1817 trade treaty. Speaking at the event dubbed "Homecoming: adversity and commemoration," King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said the first-ever exhibition of the artefacts at #ManhyiaPalace reflected the "soul of the Asante people." "(Though) not all have been returned, what we have here still embodies the soul of the Asantes," the king said of the items looted in 1874. "So, the spirit is back here, and today is a day for Asantes, a day for the black African continent, and the spirits are back with us again today." The Ghanaian King showcased the artefacts in the newly refurbished Manhyia Palace Museum in #Kumasi, the seat of the Asantehene kingdom. Each artefact offers visitors a rare glimpse into the splendour of Asante history and #culture. The exhibition is NOW open to the public. Update on AFRICA’s ambitious $36 BILLION Great Green Wall Initiative: Over the past several decades, #deforestation, agricultural expansion, and #drought have all contributed to #desertification in parts of the African #continent. Once-fertile soil has become drier and less productive. More than a dozen African countries have been fighting this desertification with an ambitious project to grow trees and other vegetation on 247 million acres of degraded land, an area roughly 2.3 times the size of California. The goals of the 17-year-old #GreatGreenWall project — estimated to cost between $36 to 49 billion — also include generating 10 million jobs and sequestering 250 million tons of carbon by 2030. Countries from #Senegal to #Djibouti are trying to regreen the semiarid #Sahel bioclimate, a band stretching from the #AtlanticOcean to the #RedSea. The dangers of land degradation include soil erosion and lessened #biodiversity. West African forests once covered over 50,000 square miles. Since 1975, deforestation, mainly from agricultural expansion, reduced the size to about 32,000 square miles, according to the US Geological Survey. In addition to making soil less fertile, desertification can make it more prone to wind erosion and less able to retain moisture. It also leads to a loss in biodiversity of plant and animal species. All of these factors make it more difficult for human #populations to survive. The Great Green Wall initiative launched in 2007 as a plan to plant trees across a large swath of the African continent. The #AfricanUnion formally began the project in 2007. Originally, the GGW included 11 countries — #BurkinaFaso 🇧🇫, #Chad 🇹🇩, #Djibouti 🇩🇯, #Eritrea 🇪🇷, #Ethiopia 🇪🇹, #Mali 🇲🇱, #Mauritania 🇲🇷, #Niger 🇳🇪, #Nigeria 🇳🇬, #Senegal 🇸🇳, and #Sudan 🇸🇩. In the years since it started, a handful of others have joined as well. At first, the plan was to fill a 10-mile-by-4,350-mile area of the Sahel with #trees. Trees can help slow soil erosion, absorb carbon dioxide, and promote biodiversity by providing food and shelter for animals. AfCFTA May UPDATE: Accelerating AFRICA’s development agenda in 2024: The #AfricanContinentalFreeTradeArea (AfCFTA) is the flagship project of the #AfricanUnion’s #Agenda2063, a blueprint for attaining inclusive and sustainable #development across the #continent over the next 50 years. It aims to boost #intraAfricantrade by providing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial #trade agreement among the member states, covering trade in goods and services, #investment, #intellectualpropertyrights and competition policy. The Agreement entered into force on 30 May, 2019 for the 24 countries that had deposited their instruments with the #AfricanUnionCommission (AUC) Chairperson – the designated depositary for this purpose. The #AfCFTASecretariat – charged with various responsibilities related to the implementation of the #AfCFTA – is hosted by Ghana. Wamkele Mene was officially appointed the first Secretary-General of the Secretariat on 19 March 2020, and is now serving his second term. The AfCFTA Secretariat was officially handed over in #Accra, #Ghana on 17 August 2020. Start of trading under the AfCFTA Agreement began on 1 January 2021. As at January 2024, Rules of Origin have been agreed on 92.3% of total tariff lines and the operationalisation of the Pan-African Payments and Settlements System (PAPSS) has been officially launched. On 7 October 2022, the AfCFTA Secretariat launched the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative (GTI) in #Accra to allow for commercially meaningful trade under the Agreement to commence for EIGHT (8) participating countries: #Cameroon 🇨🇲, #Egypt 🇪🇬, #Ghana 🇬🇭, #Kenya 🇰🇪, #Mauritius 🇲🇺, #Rwanda 🇷🇼, #Tanzania 🇹🇿 and #Tunisia 🇹🇳, representing the five regions of #AFRICA. This initiative is being used to pilot the operational, institutional, legal and trade policy environment under the AfCFTA. In 2024, the scope of the #GTI has been expanded in both product and country coverage across the five African regions and Islands States, with a total of thirty-five (35) State Parties having expressed interest to or have joined the initiative. As at May 2024, 47 of the 54 signatories (85.2%) have deposited their instruments of AfCFTA ratification with the #AUC Chairperson. Note: #Eritrea 🇪🇷 ONLY country not to sign the AfCFTA agreement. #BurkinaFaso 🇧🇫 #Guinea 🇬🇳 #Mali 🇲🇱 #Niger 🇳🇪 and #Gabon 🇬🇦 are currently SUSPENDED from the African Union.
