Pink & White Terraces, natural thermal bathing pools that descended from geysers in stunning silica formations to nearby Lake Rotomahana. Vanished in the aftermath of the massive June 10, 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Terraces are mostly intact but are beneath 200 feet of water. Wairakei Terraces, Taupo, New Zealand - man made geothermal/silica terraces give us a glimpse as to what the destroyed Pink and White Terraces (8th natural wonder of the world) would have looked like before the Tarawera eruption of 1886. Accompanied by hot pools to soak in, day spa facilities and a developing Maori village, this place is a wee gem that I stumbled across last weekend. Pink and White Terraces
Parts of New Zealand’s Pink and White Terraces (pure white silica hot springs) were just re-discovered. The geothermic formations had once been considered the 8th wonder of the world. That is, until 1886 when a devastating volcano erupted, burying them in a crater of sediment, consequently shaping a lake that would eventually swallow every trace of their existence.

Before the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, the Pink and White Terraces at Rotomahana were a spectacular tourist attraction. The terraces had natural silica basins where you could bathe. When English novelist Anthony Trollope sampled one of the pools in the early 1870s he wrote, ‘The baths are … like vast open shells, the walls of which are concave, and the lips ornamented in a thousand forms … I have never heard of other bathing like this in the world.’ Around The World Trips, Phenomena, Natural Phenomena, Nature Beauty, Wonders Of The World, Around The Worlds
