Phormium tenax is the indigeneous flax of New Zealand, distributed throughout the country mostly around wetlands and open ground near rivers and streams.
Although once widespread, drainage of swamps and clearing of vegetation meant that by the late 20th century there were only small remnants of wild New Zealand swamp flax left.
One of the first species for a restoration or riparian plan. Establishing quickly and often supporting large communities of wildlife providing shelter and an extensive food resource.
Tui, bellbirds, saddlebacks, short tailed bats, geckos and native bees feed on the nectar from the flowers. Many insects go through their complete lifecycle on a flax without causing any harm to this plant.
