Actor, director and social activist Nandita Das was targeted by trolls over an alleged controversial quote attributed to her on social media. The supposed statement in question was, 'Every man is a potential rapist.' The quote went viral online and soon jokes were being cracked at her expense. "Every Nandita Das is a potential Alia Bhatt," said one of the many men who had objected to the statement. After realising that the topic had created quite a furore online, the actress then clarified that she was falsely quoted and that she never said all men are rapists. An online movement against fairness products found a star in Nandita Das, who is perhaps the only actress to have resolutely refused to change her skin tone despite the pressures of the entertainment industry. Nandita Das, in a report stated that the industry is more kind to men. She further explained that actresses who are wonderful at their work but look unconventional, have struggled to make it. She further asserted that men who are not conventionally good looking, have to try hard as well, but they still manage to be the hero in films. Though the online campaign against fairness products has now trained its sights on a brand endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan, Nandita commented that she does not want to target any individual or entity, because she felt that the issue is much larger. Not just this, she has also lent her support to the 'Dark is Beautiful' campaign to draw attention to the ills of bias based on the colour of skin.

Reportedly, when Nandita was asked about how successful was her campaign, 'Dark Is Beautiful', she stated that by default she had become the face of it because most of the actors who were dark have progressively become lighter and lighter with every film.
