Message from the Christmas Tree?

christmas tree 2023

Wellington.Scoop
The Christmas Tree in Courtenay Place could be sending a political message.

It seems to have been built from road cones.

Could that be a message from Golden Mile businesses who don’t want the LGWM changes and don’t want to be impacted by the construction work?

Or if the tree was designed by the city council, is the message more confused?

The council must have been paying attention. They’ve issued a press release explaining they have planned some “playful fun with a road cone Christmas tree,” and they are organising elves wearing hi-vis vests. Such plans, they say, will be a boost for city businesses.

How far from Christmas can they get?

As if we don’t see enough of these awful things every day of our lives! What a crass piece of artwork that has no relevance to the occasion, other than the fact we will have to encounter more of these wretched cones over the summer!
    1/10 for effort WCC.

Cones are logical for a fir-tree!

Well at least it looks as though it was nice and cheap to build, as would be befitting a city that needs to save a few hundred million or so. Nothing wrong with a recyclable $29.95 Christmas tree !

Should have put it in Civic Square to bring some Christmas cheer to that forgotten wasteland.

A road cone Christmas tree on the footpath is exactly par for Wellington – where else would one expect road accessories!

The WCC in my Christmas story is likened to Ebenezer Scrooge, too high rates cancelled Christmas . And all those struggling to pay rates can look at a parade and decorations that they funded.
    Let them eat road cones.

And it’s appropriate that there is a giant clown nose on the top of the WCC tree.

I suspect Dolly Parton’s quote is very apt in this context :

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap”

This can only be interpreted as the WCC giving the finger to the businesses that oppose the golden mile “revitalisation”.

Utterly the most disgusting Christmas tree I’ve ever seen. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Pull it down.

A great big middle finger (sorry, “playful fun”) from WCC to everyone stuck in traffic behind a million cones as the “bicycle or get out” agenda gathers momentum.

Guess where cones usually end up, especially when there are young people with a little drink in them in Courtenay Place. I fear for the health of this tree. What a trophy for next year’s student flat.

I think it looks silly and funny and I quite like it as a piece of street furniture – it makes me smile. But be careful – it’s soooo easy to overdo “lame” and “quirky”

I think We need to look at the WCC staff and if there is s need for a shakeup we need to cut cost there, can’t always be the Mayor or councilors. This killed Charismas!! There is no warmth, no joy and absolutely no spirit.

No joy of Christmas in this tree at all!
