Alabama girl, 7, selling lemonade to help pay for her brain surgeries

Instead of saving up for a new toy or a trip to Disney World, a 7-year-old from Alabama will be using the savings from her recently opened lemonade stand to fund her upcoming brain surgeries.

Liza Scott is the 7-year-old in question. Her mother, Elizabeth Scott, runs Savage’s Bakery in Homewood.

Liza has always loved making lemonade and other sweet treats, according to her donation page. It was only after she suffered a Grand Mal seizure early Jan. 30 that her love of making and baking turned into a life-saving business.

Liza’s seizure is believed to be caused by three cerebral malformations, her mother told WIAT. The malformations are already rare, but Liza’s are even rarer. She has three, while most doctors only see one in people who have them.

According to her donation page, Liza needs immediate attention to prevent further seizures, a stoke and more. So next week, Liza and her mother will be off to Boston’s Children’s Hospital for her first surgery in a series of many.

Enter, Liza’s lemonade.

The spunky, loving and fearless girl, as her mother describes Liza numerous times on her Facebook page, sets up each day inside of her mother’s bakery hoping to raise money for her surgeries.

The proceeds from each glass of lemonade will help fund many of the out-of-pocket costs each trip will incur, including lodging, travel and more.

“I can’t handle it. So, I hope I make it,” Liza told WIAT. “My mom keeps saying I’m going to, but I feel like I’m not.”

There’s numerous ways to help both Liza and her mother.

If you’re in the Homewood area, the pair are taking donations in person at the bakery located at 2916 18th St. South. If you’re not local, they are also accepting donations online at her donation page, Lemonade for Liza and through the mail at the above address.

Elizabeth says she is grateful for any donations she receives, any of Liza’s lemonade that’s bought, or even just prayers.

“Thank you for loving us, for praying for us, for just being present to see God’s hand in Liza’s life and in her journey,” she said on Liza’s donation page.
