FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE BOOK THAT INTRODUCED TRANSCENDENTAL MEDICATION TO WESTERN AUDIENCES

YOGI, Maharishi Mahesh. The Science of Being and Art of Living. (New York): New American Library, (1963). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First American edition of the book that introduced millions to Transcendental Meditation, which became a highlight of 1960s counterculture and a practice adopted by celebrities including Mia Farrow and The Beatles.

"In 1968, the Fab Four wrote most of the White Album while staying at [Maharishi's] ashram located in the Rajaji national park, besides the river Ganges… The Beatles had one of their most concentrated spells of songwriting at the ashram and their visit overlapped with The Beach Boys" (The Guardian). While the Beatles eventually left when fellow visitors Mia and Prudence Farrow accused Maharishi of groping them (except for Ringo who left 10 days in over the bugs and food), Maharishi's practice of Transcendental Meditation had already become trendy among the Flower Power set. However, Maharishi's influence was not limited to Beatles fans: even Clint Eastwood became a follower. Despite the controversy over Maharishi's behavior, many were drawn to a practice that offered inner peace in return for 40 minutes of meditation every day. Eventually, transcendental meditation (as well as visits to India and ashrams, generally) came to be regarded as an indispensable part of 1960s counterculture. Today, Maharishi's movement boasts over five million devotees, with assets over 3 billion dollars. Published the same year as the Indian first edition.

Book fine, bright dust jacket near-fine with only slight wear mainly to extremities. A lovely copy.
