DR. ABDI ZALTASH

Of Knoxville, TN, died after a heroic struggle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Friday, October 18, 2013. He was born on May 7, 1959 in Tehran, Iran to Aini and Simin Zaltash. On July 3, 1995, he married his beloved wife, Therese. He is survived by his wife; his brothers: Asad, Abbas, and Ali Zaltash; his nephews, Reza and Rahi; his godchildren: Kiana and Armon Ansari, Isaac Mahderekal, and Rainier and Kate Villatuya; his great-niece, Yazmine; and his great nephew, Shah. Abdi completed his undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as a Senior Research and Development (R&D) staff member at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for over twenty years. Dr. Zaltash was the recipient of the 2011 "Oscars of Innovation" R&D 100 award for one of the top one hundred technology products of the year. He was the fellow and associate editor of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). As a leader in his field, his accomplishments include: chair of the ASME heat pump technical committee, member of ASME Advanced Energy Systems Division and sub-committee chairperson of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He also re-wrote the 2008 ASHRAE Handbook on Cogeneration Systems. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the Beinhauer-Fryer Funeral Home in Pittsburgh, PA at 11 AM. In addition, a memorial service will be held at Central Baptist Church in Fountain City, Knoxville, TN on October 29, 2013 at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Abdi Zaltash Memorial Scholarship Fund: University of Pittsburgh c/o Dr. George Klinzing - Vice Provost for Research 826 Cathedral of Learning Pittsburgh, PA 15260. Abdi will be missed for his friendship, love, and ever present smile.
