The Mirror Lakes along the Milford Road in New Zealand

Mirror Lakes is, as the name suggests, a stunning lake that provides you with magnificent reflective views of the snow-capped Earl Mountains behind it. It is a great place to stop for a little stroll before you continue down Milford Road.

The view from Pop's Viewpoint at the Milford Road in New Zealand

As you continue down the road, you will find a beautiful vista point, Pop's View Point, where you will be able to appreciate just how beautiful and lush the forest and the valleys around the Milford Sound are.

After Pop's View Point, a few kilometers north, you will find another beautiful valley to take photos of. It's the Gertrude Valley Lookout where you will be able to have an unobstructed view of the beautiful valley you will be driving to.

The mountain view along the Milford Road in New Zealand

After Gertrude Valley, you will enter a tunnel. After about 5 minutes, when you are out of the tunnel, you will be blown away by the sheer beauty of the mountains along the Milford Road. It is as if you are being transported through a dimension into a fairy tale world with high cliffs and snowy mountains on both sides of the road.

The view from 1855 Lookout Point on the Milford Road, New Zealand

And one of the best stops along this road is at the 1855 Lookout Point where you will be able to see the curvy roads going between a valley towards a snow-capped mountain. This view is the reason why you visit New Zealand. This view is what I call perfection 😙👌!

As you can see, there are so many stops along the way to the Milford Sound that it is a tourist attraction in and of itself. But we are not here to see just these stops along the road; we are here to see the Milford Sound. By 1:15 PM, you should arrive at the Milford Sound Pier ready to experience the best natural wonder of New Zealand.

Cruising the Milford Sound

The view of the Milford Sound in New Zealand

Once you arrive at the Milford Sound pier, you will board the GreatSight Cruise where you will find plenty of space onboard for you to choose from. There is also an outdoor deck if you wish to take some photos. I spent the entire 2 hours outside, and it was worth it!

The view of Mount Pembroke from the Milford Sound in New Zealand

Out of the gate, you will see the poster image of Milford Sound with high snow-capped mountains facing you. On your right, you will see a stunning valley with the snow-covered Mount Pembroke looming behind.

The waterfalls at the Milford Sound, New Zealand

The Milford Sound is the land of plunging cliffs and raging waterfalls, and as you cruise along the fjord, you will be surrounded by nothing but plunging cliffs and raging waterfalls.

Dale Point at the Milford Sound in New Zealand

Your cruise will travel toward Dale Point where it will turn back and start visiting each of the waterfalls and animal colonies you just saw up close. Not too far from Dale Point, you will find a penguin colony and a seal colony at the foot of these cliffs along both sides of the fjord.

The Stirling Falls from afar at the Milford Sound, New Zealand

The cruise will also take you to the breathtaking Stirling Falls, a steep dramatic cascade standing at over 150m high. They will then plunge the head of the cruise under the waterfall, allowing you to experience the power of the Stirling Falls up close. This is when you will need a poncho or a waterproof jacket.

Under the Sterling Falls at the Milford Sound in New Zealand

Once that is done, you will then be dropped off at the pier again at around 4 PM, and you will be driven back on the same coach to Te Anau. You should be back in town by 5 PM, and that concludes our day trip to Milford Sound.

When to Visit the Milford Sound?

The Milford Sound on a sunny day in New Zealand

The Milford Sound is one of the rainiest areas in New Zealand. It experiences over 182 rainy days per year, and you would have to consider yourself lucky to be able to see it on a sunny day. That said, the Milford Sound is beautiful in any condition, especially during spring from September to November.

During springtime, the weather in Milford Sound is a little calmer, which increases the chance of clear days during your visit. There will also be more waterfalls and fewer people to deal with during that time, so if you can plan ahead, be sure to align your trip around New Zealand's springtime.

Which tourist SIM card is best for New Zealand?

Update: If your phone supports eSIM, I highly recommend checking out Airalo, a global eSIM marketplace. It allows you to stay connected affordably while traveling in Te Anau, New Zealand without having to switch out your physical SIM card.

Gone are the days when you needed to scramble to find a local SIM card at an airport upon arrival. You can purchase an eSIM before your arrival, and you'll be good to go. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, here is how you can get a local SIM card in Te Anau, New Zealand:

Don't expect much from New Zealand's WIFI. They are terribly outdated, with some cafes offering free 25 MB and 15-minute time-limited WIFI to their customers. Yes, really!

For a more reliable internet connection, I would recommend that you get yourself a local SIM card where you will be able to find a 4G connection in all the major cities around the country now.

Spark is a recommended carrier with the widest coverage across the country. You can purchase their prepaid SIM card package, "Data Lover," at the Auckland airport. It is available in two price points: 20 NZD for 1 GB (+1 GB for social) and 40 NZD for 4.5 GB (+1 GB for social), both valid for one month.

With Spark, you can top up your data via stores around the country, or you can simply do it online with your credit card. Very easy and convenient.

Tips: To stay connected with people at home, be sure that you have a VPN, such as ProtonVPN, installed before traveling. It's FREE, and you can gain access to services that may be blocked in certain countries.

What to Pack for the Milford Sound?

As you may already know, I am an advocate of light traveling, and indeed, packing light for a journey like this is a unique art form. Here are some packing tips for your upcoming trip to Te Anau, New Zealand:

  • Walking/Hiking Shoes: With all the walking and possible hiking during your travel, a comfortable pair of shoes is a must. I recommend the Timberland 3-Eye Classic Boat Shoes that are my go-to pair for long strolls and hikes.
  • Breathable Shirts: Given the potential for hot weather, pack a few breathable shirts for your outdoor adventures.
  • Shorts/Jeans: Anticipate lots of walking during your travels? Be sure to pack some breathable shorts and a pair of Levi's jeans for when the weather cools. For women, leggings are excellent for both hot and cold climates, so consider packing some as well.
  • Fleece Jacket: For colder weather, layering is the key, and a fleece jacket makes an excellent insulating layer. I recommend the Columbia Steens Mountain Fleece (for women).
  • Outer Shell Jacket: An outer shell jacket is great for windy or rainy conditions. I highly recommend the Columbia Watertight Jacket (for women). It's lightweight, breathable, and even comes in a cool orange color.
  • Down Jacket: In freezing temperatures, a down jacket is essential. The Columbia Men's Lone Fir Hooded Jacket (for women) is my choice. They are warm, lightweight, and available in various colors.
  • Wool Beanie: A wool beanie is perfect for keeping your head and ears warm.
  • Wool Gloves: I always have wool gloves handy to keep my hands warm in cold weather.
  • Wool Socks: Don't forget to keep your feet warm with wool socks.
  • Microfiber Towel: A Microfiber towel is the ideal backpacker's towel due to its lightness, quick drying, and compressibility.
  • Camera: You should also pack a good camera for your trip so that you can capture all the beautiful experiences you might have. I recommend the Sony a7R V camera together with the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II lens, which is probably the highest-performance camera and lens combination you can get right now.
  • Power Bank: Keep your electronics charged on the go with a 20,000+ mAh Power Bank.
  • Water Bottle: The Hydro Flask Trail Water Bottle is a great insulated water bottle to have with you in cities or on hiking trails. It is lightweight and can keep your water cold or warm for more than 12 hours. It's a total game-changer.
  • Universal Adapter: You'll need just one universal adapter to plug in your electronics in any country you visit.
  • Packing Cubes: Packing Cubes will help you save space in your backpack and keep all your belongings organized.
  • Daypack: The Langly Alpha Globetrotter is my go-to everyday camera backpack. It's large enough to carry all my travel gear, and it comes with plenty of slots and pouches. Plus, it's stylish as hell!
  • Large Backpack: You will need a large backpack to carry all of your stuff. I recommend the Osprey Atmos AG 65L backpack. With excellent weight distribution and a lifetime guarantee, you can't go wrong with Osprey.
