Why this petition matters

As we all know, artificial food coloring is a substance that include whole grains and gives color to our food and drinks. Conveniently, they are available in various forms, including liquids, powders, gels, and pastes. It looks good when it's added to a food and drinks. However, some of us are not aware of the harmful effects of it to our health and how it’s made.

Food dyes contains chemicals that are normally derived from petroleum and crude oil product, which also happens to be used in gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, and tar. It also has choking hazards because of its spongy texture. Most of the consumers don’t seem to be fazed by it even though companies tell us right there that there is ‘artificial color’ printed in the ingredient label.

In different parts of the world, hotdogs are known as junk food packed with unhealthy ingredients. When Filipinos migrate overseas or get to eat regular American hotdogs in the Philippines, they find them too salty and not tasty enough so they start craving for the familiar taste, color and texture of Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs, which are seen as a great source of nutrients, packed full of protein and carbohydrates. The mere fact that these Filipino franks have no MSG and are fortified with iodine is looked on very favorably.

The bright red color that is seen in Purefood’s TJ Hotdog does add a huge dose of fun and vibrancy to eating enjoyment, as well as helping distinguish Filipino hotdogs from the common franks and sausages.

Ingredients of Purefood’s TJ Hotdog includes mechanically separated Turkey, Pork, Water, Modified Food Starch, Salt, Sodium Phosphates, Spice, Sodium Erythorbate, Flavoring, Sodium Nitrite, Oleoresin of Paprika, Red 40.

We recently discovered that the Tender Juicy Hotdog (Purefoods) are using harmful additives that are not used and banned in other countries. This product contains artificial food dye, Red 40 or also known as Allura Red. According to Center for Science in the Public Interest, this food dye has contaminants that can cause allergic reactions in some people, cancer in humans, hyperactivity in children, and immune system tumors in mice.

Here are some source of natural red food dye that Purefoods Tender Juice can use for their hotdogs:
- pure beet juice
- beet powder
- pure pomegranate juice
- red raspberry purée, strained to remove seeds
- cochineal beetle (sounds gross but it has been used for over a century)

More and more consumers are fed up with chemical laden foods that pose a health risk to their children. With behavioral disorders like ADHD rampant in the schools and these disorders increasingly linked to artificial ingredients in food these consumers are looking for quality items that they can feel good about serving to their children.

Here are possible benefits if San Miguel Purefoods Tender Juicy will use natural red food dye for their hotdogs:

Tender Juicy Hotdog (Purefoods) could obtained different benefits if they will shift using artificial food coloring to natural one. Using natural food coloring has least environmental impact because it is safe, more appealing to the consumers and can be found in renewable sources like plants.

Companies that are proactive and begin offering products that are made with natural dyes and flavorings will find that they have less competition in the marketplace and may be able to charge higher price for their products.

Best of all, they are likely to have a loyal customer base that recommends them, increasing their brand recognition. Using all natural colorings and other products is a win-win situation.

That's why we're petitioning to San Miguel Purefoods to remove all dangerous artificial food dyes from their line of Tender Juicy Hotdog and use natural food dyes instead.
