Tokyo's first public park, Ueno Park took over what was once the sacred temple grounds of Kan'ei-ji Temple, no longer standing after being destroyed in the Boshin War in 1868. Like the adjacent Yanaka Cemetery, Ueno Park is best known for its natural canopy of cherry blossoms which bloom each spring through fall. Drawing millions of visitors a year, this parks is a welcome reprieve from the urban craze of its surroundings.
