Professor Peter Saunders was the Director of the Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC) at the University of New South Wales, Sydney between 1987 and 2009 and was appointed Emeritus Professor in 2019. His research interests and publications cover: poverty, deprivation and social exclusion; economic and social inequalities; household needs and budget standards; social security design, impact and reform; ageing and social protection; and comparative social policy. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1995, was the first President of the Australian Social Policy Association between 2009 and 2013 and President of the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security (FISS) between 2009 and 2023. He has worked at the OECD, and as a consultant for the IMF, the Asian Development Bank and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). In 2015-16 was a member of the Advisory Board of the World Bank Commission on Global Poverty. His recent books include Social Protection in East Asian Chinese Societies. Challenges, Responses and Impacts, Routledge, 2018 (with Alex Jingwei He), Revisiting Henderson: Poverty, Social Security and Basic Income, Melbourne University Press, 2019 and Poverty and Inequality in East Asia: Work, Family and Policy, Edward Elgar, 2022 (with Inhoe Ku). In 2022 he was appointed an Officer in The Order of Australia (AO) “For distinguished service to tertiary education, particularly through social policy research and development.”

We are pleased to invite you to attend a mini-conference focused on the theme of “Poverty and Deprived Groups”. The conference will feature esteemed speakers who will share their insights and experiences in the field.

The purpose of this mini-conference is to foster international research collaboration on poverty and social disadvantage by providing a platform for our collaborators to share their current research related to the theme. The event will feature a keynote presentation by Prof. Peter Saunders from the University of New South Wales and plenary presentations by our collaborators.

Writing Wrongs: (Part of) My Journey through the Foothills of Scholarship

Prof. Saunders will share his valuable research experience with the participants. He will describe how he began his career in the world of scholarship, how he transferred from economics into social policy, how he was appointed Director of the Social Policy Research Centre and how that position allowed him to develop his skills as a leader of, and an active participate in, social policy research. He will identify some of the key events that shaped his journey through the world of academia, focusing on his research on poverty, but also covering aspects of his broader scholarly maturity and development.
