JOHN KERINS CUP (U20 Football Development League)

DUBLIN 0-7 KERRY 1-7

Dublin were edged out by Kerry in Saturday afteroon's John Kerins Cup (U20 football) in Claughaun GAA, Limerick.

The only goal of a contest played in a very tricky crossfield wind came in first half injury-time when Kerry full-forward Eddie Horan won a long delivery into the danger area before firing past Dave O'Hanlon.

The Dubs had battled with good spirit in the opening half after being reduced to 14 men in the 14th minute when Harry Ladd was red-card for an incident off the ball which also resulted in Kerry's full-back Dylan Casey being shown a yellow card.

Kerry opened with points from Fiachra Clifford and Eddie Horan before Ciaran Archer opened Dublin's account in the seventh minute following a clever threaded pass from James Doran.

The Kingdom moved 0-3 to 0-1 ahead when corner-forward Donal O'Sullivan moved in along the endline to fist over.

Ciaran Archer closed the gap with a point following good graft by Evan Caulfield, Sean Lambe and Ross McGarry before Ladd was dismissed, however, Dublin kicked the next two scores to move 0-4 to 0-3 ahead by the 20th minute.

St Maur's man Archer got both points, the first from a 30-metre free after a foul on James Doran and following up with a another from ten metres further back.

In between those scores Kerry almost got through for a goal but Eddie Horan's goal-bound shot was brilliantly volleyed off the line by Aaron Lynch.

Dublin then had a brief goal sighting but Archer lost his footing on the turn from 14 metres and Kerry keeper Brian Lonergan dealt comfortably with the shot.

Horan brought the sides level, 0-4 each, before a massive Archer free from the right sideline edged Dublin back in front.

Kerry held the upperhand to the interval scoring 1-1 with Horan getting the goal but they also missed a penalty when Paul Walsh blazed his effort wide.

Kerry led 1-5 to 0-5 at half-time but within the opening minute of the second half Archer converted his fourth point, this one from 47 metres.

In the swirling wind neither team created any real goal-scoring opportunities in the second period when the physical intensity increased but Dublin shot six wides against a sole wide for Kerry.

Horan pushed Kerry out to a clear goal lead before Archer made it a two-point game with a free following a foul on sub David Lacey.

Four minutes from time Kerry sub Killian Falvey ensure Kerry's win with a point from play.

In the concluding moments Dublin's Sean Lambe was dismissed on a second yellow card, two minutes into added time, and Kerry's Eddie Horan likewise a minute later.

It proved to be a busy day for Dublin's Ciaran Archer, having scored 0-7 (0-5f) for Dublin's U20s he made it back to St Mobhi Road in time to come off the bench inside the last 15 minutes to score 2-1 (1-1f) for his club St Maur's in their 2-18 to 3-8 AFL1 defeat to Na Fianna. His second goal came from a close range free, going in off the inside of the post.

In the curtain-raiser in Claughaun Galway defeated Cork 1-11 to 0-12 in the John Kerins Cup.
