Just a short drive from Twizel in the Waitaki Region are the astounding Clay Cliffs. It’s like stepping into a western movie with a fascinating landscape of steep pinnacles and deep ravines.

The Clay Cliffs are a geological wonder, formed millions of years ago from layers of silt and gravel deposited by ancient lakes and rivers. These layers were then uplifted and tilted by an active fault and subsequently eroded, giving them their dramatic appearance. Kids and adults love exploring the cliffs – it’s a great place for a picnic.

The cliffs are on private land. There’s a donation box at the gate where you can pay the $5 vehicle admission fee. To get to the Clay Cliffs, turn onto Quailburn Rd off SH8 and then onto unsealed Henburn Rd.
