NCEA Level 3 Geography students visit Muriwai Beach to gather data

The Macleans College NCEA Level 3 Geography students recently visited Muriwai Beach to collect data for their geographical investigation.

This was a long-awaited trip that was postponed due to the damage done to the Muriwai community and environment during Cyclone Gabrielle in February this year.

The students gathered data to prove, or disprove, their hypothesis that had been set previously in the classroom. An array of techniques was used to measure different coastal processes such as longshore drift, beach profiles and saltation.

It was a beautiful brisk morning and allowed the students to gather the important data they needed in perfect conditions before the rain started.

The highlight for students was spotting the seal that was napping on a piece of driftwood right by Otakamiro Point.
