Kanye West is at the center of self-made social media controversy once more, and yet again, it involves the freedom of women's bodies.
The rapper's latest stunt saw him promote the explicit performance of women twerking on laptops on his Instagram story, and defend it in the name of art.
What did Kanye West put on his Instagram Story?
Kanye shared a six-week-old post from an account called "festering vomitous mass" which displayed a piece of performance art called "SOLAS" from Spanish artist Candela Capitán.
The Vultures rapper also posted a short clip of hentai in the following Instagram story, which came from Capitán's account as well.
Although it was not visible on West's story, this was the original meaning of the art from 2023: "SOLAS exhibits the copying, the repetition and the wear and tear of the image on the internet, but also highlights the hyper-individualism and hyper- connectivity present in social networks."
"At the same time, SOLAS ventures to talk about the (in)visibility of the female body in the immaterial market of data that invades today and where the body continues to be considered the main object of desire," Capitán wrote.
Fans split on Kanye's definition of "art"
It is a thought-provoking concept, but one that Kanye engaged with casually. His stories without context led to comments on the original post like "How is this art? My kid could do that!" and "Kanye feeling freaky today."
Another popular comment on the post that 'Ye shared took his side. "The amount of people that won't understand this is artistic and meant to provoke thought is gonna be insane," it said.
The lesson behind the art can be applied directly to Kanye, whose parading of his wife, Bianca Sensori, in see-through clothing has drawn lots of criticism recently.
Did West see SOLAS and reconsider the morality of his own actions? Is he excusing himself by suggesting that social media has ruined our minds already? With no added context, it's hard to say.
Much like the art, Kanye's post is open to interpretation.
