What to look for when buying an artificial Christmas tree

There are a lot of Christmas tree options for buyers in the lead up to Christmas.  A good quality tree will last a long time, making it a sensible investment. But what sets trees apart from each other?  There are a number of things to look for in a quality tree.

  1. The fullness of a tree is determined by the number of individual tips on a tree.  The tips are the stems off the branch which is hinged to the main pole.  Tree quality is also dependent on the materials used to make the tips.  The green PVC “foliage” used for traditional artificial trees comes in different lengths and widths which both creates the fullness.

  2. Most artificial trees are made of PVC and sometimes a blend of PVC and bristle, but for a more realistic look trees are also made with injection moulded polyethelene (PE). PE tips are 3 dimensional and are used to replicate natural tree features.  In many cases trees are made with PE outer tips and PVC tips down the branch to the trunk.

  3. Trees that are well made will have well secured tips and won’t have issues of “unravelling”.

  4. Trees that are assembled on metal stands are sturdier than those on plastic stands.

Other Considerations

  • The space for a tree needs to be considered as some trees have a wide base diameter which can be difficult to accommodate. Also take into account height as a tree brushing the ceiling does not allow for decorations on the top of the tree.  Slim trees are a good option for confined spaces and are available in taller sizes so that the overall impression of a good-sized tree is not lost.

  • Colour is another consideration when choosing a decorating theme. Even within the green spectrum there are light through to dark options which all lend themselves to different decorating colour ways.  For traditional decorating themes any green tone will work.

  • Lights make a stunning display in a tree. It is possible to inexpensively string lights in a tree once a tree is assembled.  For those short on time pre lit trees have the benefit of having the lights wired into the construction of the tree which gives an even lit appearance, as well as giving depth to the lighting as they are wired down the length of each stem.
