The Split Apple Rock is an unusual rock formation located in Tasman Bay, on the South Island of New Zealand. Locals call it Toko Ngawha, which means "open rock". This nickname is no coincidence since this enormous sphere is literally split in half. The boulder is entirely composed of granite and is divided into 2 perfect halves, resembling an apple split right down in the middle, sparking the interest of geologists from all around.

Although the clean cut right down the middle has not been explained, the most logical cause could be due to a phenomenon of meteorization and thermal expansion, a principle commonly developed in particularly cold environments. Water may have infiltrated the already existing split in the rock, later spreading the fracture even further thus beginning an endless process until finally the rock simply broke in two.

Many legends were born around this bizarre formation and one in particular talks about the contention between two Maori deities who fought hard for possession of the rock until they realized neither side was willing to surrender. The dispute was then settled by dividing the boulder in half so that each could have its share.
