Weather: Lightning, hail hits Auckland just one day after massive downpour

Lightning and hail have hit Auckland just one day after the city experienced another downpour and widespread flooding.

From about 8:45pm to just after 9pm on Wednesday, thunderstrikes were seen in the super city that were accompanied by heavy hail.

A video sent to Newshub shows one lightning strike from someone's kitchen window in Sunnyvale on Auckland's North Shore.

They started hearing rolling thunder as they sat in the kitchen. But what really got their attention were the hailstones that hit their house so loudly their dog started crying.

"While it started pouring I started filming. The excitement in my voice [in the video] was from seeing the beauty of it all," they told Newshub.

Another person, who lives in New Lynn in west Auckland, sent images of hailstones that hammered so loud the sound was "deafening".

It comes just one day after heavy rain lashed much of the upper North Island. Auckland remains under a state of emergency as a result of the downpour.

MetService has forecast more thunderstorms for parts of the North Island on Thursday, while a cold change is expected to bring snow to the south.
