Who We Are

The idea of creating espalier trees germinated when Keith thought an espalier tree would look good on the back wall of his urban section. Coming from Britain, the practice of espaliering fruit trees has a long and noble history. Here in New Zealand the practice is limited to DIY, kiwi fruit and vineyards. Finding he could not purchase one he decided to create one. What started off as a backyard project has extended into a fully-fledged business. We now have over 200 espaliered fruit trees for sale.

The art of espalier is an ancient horticultural practice dating back to the ancient Romans. In the Middle Ages the Europeans refined it to an Art. The practice was popularly used to produce fruit inside the walls of castle courtyards with out interfering with the open space and to decorate solid walls.

The first part of our vision is to give everyone the opportunity to grow fruit in their own backyard no matter how small that space maybe. The opportunity to have something decorative as well as practical. Something that can be portable so you can take it with you if you ever must move away.

The second part of our vision is to offer an ecologically sustaining living fence. Again, practical and decorative as well as being cost effective to other sorts of fencing.

Planting & Pruning

Planting can be done at anytime of the year if they have consistent water. Fruit trees tend to like free draining soil. Can be in a sunny or partly sunny spot. They also like a bit of a breeze. Plant the frame provided with the tree as this will provide support while training. The frames can be extended or replaced once the tree is in its established shape.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or not the thought of pruning can be daunting. We have provided a guide to help you with this. The age, variety, shape and growth rate will determine how much pruning has already been done in our nursery. The diagrams provided indicate where to prune in the event you have brought a tree where you will be required to prune.

HORIZONTAL CORDON

3 buds are required to grow on forming the main shape of the tree. A bud to grow onto the left, one on the right and a top leader to go straight up, which will be pruned in subsequent years to produce the next growth tier.

PALMETTO

2 buds per side are needed here with the two left and right laterals trained to follow your bamboo frame. Do this when the laterals are supple.

FANS, SERPENTINES & BELGIAN FENCES

No shape pruning is required with these shapes. The main leader merely being trained along the frame supplied.

Pruning is best done in the winter prior to growing season and preferable after the tree has been planted and become established. Any branches you wish to remove because they are interfering with the shape of your tree can be pruned at the 2nd or 3rd bud from the main branch; these will become fruiting spurs. For further advise on pruning we would suggest Karl Pieber and Peter Modi's book Espalier Fruit Trees.
