It’s a face only mother nature can love.

Facebook group East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach warned people to “watch their step” and to be on the lookout for stargazers, an ugly fish, while on the beach.

Stargazers are creepy-looking fish that normally bury themselves in the sand to sneak up on prey. Their eyes and mouth stick out from the sand, while the rest of their bodies remain hidden, according to the Chesapeake Bay Program.

The sea creature looks like it’s something out of a horror movie, but humans luckily aren’t on the menu. They eat small fish and crabs by using their mouth to vacuum up their meals.

Stargazers may not be a serious threat to humans, but they have electric spines that can stun and confuse prey. They’re normally found in deep waters on the Atlantic coast between New York and North Carolina.

The Virginia Beach stargazer was found by a family who stumbled upon the fish after digging it up in the sand after seeing bubbles pop up, NBC Connecticut reports.

After finding the fish, the family returned it to the water unharmed — but it remained hideous.
