Kate Middleton’s Style Has Been Highly Influenced by a Royal Outside of the UK

Kate Middleton is reportedly keeping an eye on the drama that is unfolding in Denmark after Queen Margrethe II shocked the world with her abdication announcement. It isn’t the exiting queen the Princess of Wales is interested in, though, it’s the incoming queen, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The future Queen Consort, who is 10 years older than Kate, has reportedly been an influential presence in the British royal’s life, especially when it comes to fashion.

It’s not surprising to often see Princess Mary and Kate have “twinning” style moments and it’s something designers have noticed for years. “Kate is like a younger sister to Mary, who is both beautiful and elegant,” Karl Lagerfeld told The Telegraph ahead of Kate’s wedding to Prince William in 2011. While Kate is a fashion icon, it’s easy to see where she gets her inspiration from with Mary’s preference for an unfussy, but trendy, wardrobe.

“Crown Princess Mary’s signature style is very classic and sophisticated. She often goes for simple lines and streamlined silhouettes,” say royal fashion experts Sarah Williams and Heaven LeeMiller explained. “She manages to balance Scandinavian minimalism with Australian bohemianism very well. Her outfits always have a touch of trend or whimsy to prevent them from looking dull or boring.”

Kate and her fashion adviser, Natasha Archer, often draw from Mary’s memorable fashion moments that were created by the Danish royal’s stylist, Anja Camilla Alajdi. The Telegraph noted that the Princess of Wales loved Mary’s floral headband that she wore to her son Christian’s christening in 2006. When Kate had Prince Louis christened in 2018, she wore a similar design and knocked it out of the park. It’s also said that Mary’s commitment to sustainability, wearing outfits up to seven times, has had a positive effect on Kate’s royal rewears as well.

Mary and Kate’s royal experience is a similar one since they both married into the palace as outsiders. Mary had to carve her own path, but Kate is fortunate enough to draw upon her fellow royal’s experience whether it is stepping onto the throne or stepping out in style.
