A competition combining art and gardening is open to anyone with a green thumb and some ingenuity.

"The Innovation Garden Club has come up with a novel way of showcasing succulents and other hanging plants," says club president Val Helm.

Val says by using a picture frame, boxing the back and attaching chicken wire to the back of the frame, filling it with soil and re-cycled materials, it can then be hang on an outside wall.

"This competition is open to all members and non-members of the Garden Club," says Val.

"If you are not a member of the Garden Club there will be a charge of $10 to enter this competition."

The frame is to be no larger than 92cm x 72cm or can be any smaller size, and must include living plants, but can also include ornaments.

"Very strong D-rings must be attached to the back of the boxed picture frame with strong cord or rope from which to hang the exhibit," says Val.

The winning entry will receive $300 and second place $150.

Winners will be announced at 1pm on July 9 at the Waihi Beach RSA.

This "Picture in a Frame" will be exhibited at the Waihi Beach RSA from July 2 -9.
