This weekend is the final weekend that Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrors will be at the Hirshhorn. This morning my friend Peter and I stopped by to have one last look and to check the progress of the Obliteration Room which was, as one would hope, nearly totally obliterated by dots.
The Obliteration Room starts off as an all white recreation of a home living space. As visitors arrive they're given a small sheet of multicolor dots which they're free to place anywhere they like (or can reach). Over the course of the exhibition, the room is gradually transformed — obliterated, in Kusama's terms — into a riot of color that almost erases the outlines of the objects contained in the room.
Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors closes on Sunday evening at 8pm. Next, the exhibition travels to the Seattle Art Museum, reopening on June 30th.
