Things To Do in Winter in Taupō

Grab your gloves and get ready for unforgettable winter experiences in Taupo, from awesome ski fields to warm drinks before a fire.

Lakefront Taupo is a jumping-off point for Mount Ruapehu, home to New Zealand's largest ski areas: Whakapapa and Tūroa. Not to mention its longest ski seasons, running from early June to late October.

Taupo makes a fantastic base for enjoying winter activities on the slopes before hopping on the shuttle to warm up back in town, where you'll find cosy accommodation, bars and restaurants.

While there's plenty to keep skiers and boarders of all ages and abilities busy on the mountain, if you're planning a trip with non-skiers don't stress. There's more to this beautiful town than fun in the snow. Sightseeing, boozing, sports, spas - it's all here. Then you can meet up for après-ski fun in the evenings. Winner.

Check out our suggestions for what to do in winter in Taupo:

Skiing and Snowboarding

  • If you're a beginner, head for the Happy Valley playground area at Whakapapa or the Alpine Meadow at Turoa to find wide, gentle slopes to practice your turns.
  • Whakapapa has the most challenging runs, with 65 trails. Head all the way up for extreme off-piste. Strictly experts only.
  • You'll be able to zip around the mountain with the new $25m gondola opening in June 2019.

Après Ski

  • Got the nippers in tow? There are heaps of family-friendly options in Taupo. eHave pizza and pasta near the water for crowd-pleasing meals.
  • Grab lunch in New Zealand's highest café, the Knoll Ridge Café on top of the mountain. The views are incredible and so is the food.
  • Sink into comfy leather sofas with a well-earned beer gat a local brewery. On sunny days kick back on the veranda.

Other Winter Activities

  • Taupo's geothermal hot pools are a real itinerary must. Ease aching skiers legs or just relax away from the slopes. You're on your holiday, aren't you?
  • Lake Taupo is home to a great menu of activities including scenic cruises, sailing, kayaking, jet boating and rafting.
  • If the skies are more your thing, how about sky diving or bungy jumping? Or stay grounded with hiking or biking. Golf is great here in winter too.
