DIY Rear Mount Turbo Build

After about a year of gathering parts and research, I'm finally starting to build a rear mount turbo for my NC.

Goals:
$3k Budget
300WHP
Easily reversed for CA smog
Gain some welding and metal fabrication skills

Updates are going to be slow since I have maybe 1-2 hours a weekend to work on this project.

Here we go...

I test mounted the turbo using cable bolts as a method of securing the turbo to the exhaust frame. I got the tip from a member on the NC facebook page. The turbo is a Garrett TB2804 out of a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R. Why this turbo?
1. Budget. I got this turbo along with a s13 t25 for $65, yes $65 for both.
2. The TB2804 should get me close to 300WHP or at least I hope so.

The first mod I did was to install a DC sports intake. This intake is CARB approved for 2006-2009 miatas.

The filter will be removed and replaced with an aluminum pipe that has a nipple for the BOV and will connect to the intercooler piping. When it comes time for SMOG, the pipe can be removed and replaced with the filter.

Fabrication work finally started this weekend. I got the rear frame started, just some 1/2" round rod and square tubing. This is my first time welding, tig to be exact, so my welds aren't the prettiest. It's built around the same dimensions as the oem muffler.

Did one thing for this project last weekend. Drilled and tapped a billet oil cap that will serve as the oil return location. Thought it would take 15mins, but in the end it took over an hour. Tapping 1/2" npt threads took forever, had to go bit by bit. The elbow I had was also too tall, so I'll need a lower profile one to clear the hood.

I look forward to following your build. From where did you source that oil cap?

Maybe you should start your own thread.
