About | Takapuna Beach
Takapuna Beach is a popular urban beach that is great for walking along, swimming and kayaking. At the northern end, the kids will enjoy finding sea creatures in the volcanic rock pools. There’s a historic ‘lava’ trail that goes next to the rocks that is quite neat. From Takapuna Beach, you can take in the views of Rangitoto Island, Mototapu Island and the Hauraki Gulf. The beach is surrounded by beautiful pohutukawa trees, providing the perfect spot to have a picnic.
There’s a fantastic beachfront playground and water play area at The Stand that the kids can stop in and have a play at. It features intertwining slides, a tower, hammocks, swings, and the popular hamster wheel. Grab a shot of the kids in the hamster wheel with the iconic Rangitoto Island in the background. The playground can get super busy during weekends and holidays.
Takapuna Beach is midpoint along the North Shore Coastal Walk, a 23-kilometre walk that goes along the coast, starting at Long Bay and ending at Devonport.
Visit one of the many local cafes or restaurants in the area when you get hungry, all within walking distance.
Or if you’re visiting on a Sunday, why not check out the Takapuna Farmers market which is on every Sunday from 6am – noon at the corner of Anzac Street and Lake Road and pick up some tasty treats.
There are public toilets located at both ends of the beach. There’s a boat ramp located off The Promenade. A campground sits adjacent to the beach for those who wish to stay a little longer.
