Rear Mount Turbo Kit for S4/RS4?

I have only owned my S4 for a few weeks but the engine bay is absolutely crammed. A common solution for cars w/very small engine bays are rear mount turbo kits (STS). I'm not sure if anyone has done a custom one or a company offers one but they work very well on V8 cars. They sound hokie on the surface but I've installed a kit and was impressed w/the fit and finish of the system. Just like any turbo kit, they make more torque and HP all the way through the power band then any equivalent supercharger respectively. I've worked closely in the past with Boost Logic in Austin Texas a company that specializes in custom turbo systems for Supra's. I'm sure they would be more then willing to design a turbo system, possibly a remote/rear mount turbo system for the S4 for somebody who just had to have an extra 130 or so awhp. Maybe this is a topic that has been discussed before today (actually I'm sure it has) but as often as I see you guys talking about superchargers and how it is not a reality, why not do some research on getting a rear mount turbo system designed?

I don't know, just a suggestion. I'm leaving my car mostly stock sans rims/suspension and exhaust. :)

the problem is the intake is exposed at a very low area where it can suck in water. that equates to HYDROLOCK!! it works well with the corvette since it had plenty of room to place the intake behind the tail lights.

That is a concern. However, the turbo would probably sit where one of the mufflers sit now, and tucked up fairly high. True though, you wouldn't want to drive your S4 in a flood or a low water crossing, but then, I guess I would never choose to do that in the first place. I doubt that would be a real issue with any/little common sense.

That is just about what I was thinking of. Yes Boost Logic could make that. I see the intake box/covers, very smart. I love it :) Maybe in 2-3 years when I'm ready to go shit nuts on this car :) If somebody else is dying for boost, I think that is the way to go...

Concerning water, wouldn't you be concerned about water splashing on hot turbo's? Or would the turbo be hot enough to vaporize any water that contacts it?

None at all on a 5.3 and 5.62 motor I've worked with. I can't see the 4.2 being any different. I think HP TV did a rear mount C5 kit on their show one time you could probably find on youtube.com. An added benifit to the rear mount setups is the long pipe back to the motor promote charge cooling before it even sees an heat exhanger and in some cases you don't need a heat exchanger (Intercooler) for low boost setups (under 7psi)

Why would you mount the turbos so far back along the exhaust. There is a twin-tubrocharge system I heard about in Australia for the Holden V8 and they have the turbos just before the exhaust.



In any case, if there is room for them, would make quite a weapon. :)

There is room to mount the turbos right where they should go, on the exhaust manifolds. You're just looking at the engine from the wrong side. From the top, everything's crammed. Get it up on a lift, take of the lower engine covers, and voila....there's the room.

I would be more concerned with replacing the $25,000 motor than I would be with where to place the time bombs.

Yeah, not sure on this car I've only had it a few weeks. I'm not adding a turbo or a blower but there are people that want it done and the supercharger idea sure seems like a phantom reality for most of these guys. Heh, I bought this car to enjoy not to heavily mod....but I do see a place for a kit. If I wanted 650 HP I would have kept my Single Turbo MKIV Supra or my 02 Z28, each had over 500 rear wheel. I'm done street racing :) I don't want to even be tempted anymore, too much to risk in Texas.

I think a twin turbo kit will be a perfect fit and perfect upgrade for the 4.2L. being a true dual exhaust system on the car, a rear mount or pre-cat mount would be ideal. And to answer doubts above about lag, there will be none, ONLY if you do research on turbo compressor maps, and match up the correct turbos with the engine. This is how STS does it. Why do you think they dont mention what turbos they use on their cars.. because their not stupid and know that with proper tuning and knowledge of turbos people can easily replicate their kits and they cant do SH**T. I am currently working on a few cars with my cousins custom shop here in Chicago that will soon be releasing single turbo and twin turbo kit that are either rear mounted or mid mounted along the exhaust track for the Mazda6 V6 and Acura TL. But these cars surely wont see as much of a gain as a beefy V8 will. Tuning will be the ONLY... and i seriously mean ONLY issue... the rest is feasible.

have any of you guys thought about tuning? Its probably the biggest downfall in custom setups for any Audi platform. Anyone can slap on hardware but the motor is toast if you dont have a great tune

They can't do anything at all anyways. You can custom fab whatever you want. My friend has a remote mount on his Tundra and he CALLED THEM for advice on it. Whoever you're dealing w/at STS can suck it.

What exactly are you talking about? you can refill nitrous tanks, i dont see what the big problem is having nitrous
